DCDM — Digital Cinema Distribution Master
The DCDM is something most filmmakers never need to think about — but when you do need one, it's important to get it right.
It stands for Digital Cinema Distribution Master, and it's essentially the uncompressed, unencrypted version of your finished film in a standardised format — the highest-quality representation of your work that exists, sitting upstream of the DCP. Where a DCP is built for playback, a DCDM is built for archiving and distribution. The files are large, the specs are precise, and the process is a bit more involved than a standard delivery.
When do you need one?
The most common situation for independent filmmakers in Germany is this: if your project received any federal funding from the German government, the Bundesarchiv — the national archive — requires you to submit a DCDM as a condition of that funding. It's a legal obligation, and it catches a surprising number of filmmakers off guard at the end of post-production.
I can produce the DCDM as part of your finishing process, and I'm also happy to handle the submission to the Bundesarchiv directly — the paperwork, the correspondence, the whole thing. If you've never dealt with them before, it's probably one less rabbit hole you want to disappear down when you're trying to finish your film.
